Walking intervals alternate purposeful effort with easier recovery. They are a practical next step when steady walks feel comfortable but running is not appealing.
A first interval session
- Walk easily for five minutes.
- Walk briskly for one minute.
- Recover at an easy pace for two minutes.
- Repeat six times, then cool down.
The brisk minute should feel challenging but controlled. Shorten it if your form becomes rushed or you cannot recover during the easy segment.
How to progress
Do one or two interval walks per week. Add a repeat, lengthen the brisk interval, or shorten recovery, but change only one element. Keep other walks easy enough to support consistency.
Measure effort sensibly
A tracker can record pace and heart rate, but the talk test is often sufficient. Consumer devices provide trends rather than clinical measurements; see Are Fitness Trackers Accurate?.
